GOOD GOVERNANCE AND NATIONAL PRODUCTIVITY PROJECT DESIGNED TO PROMOTE EFFICIENT SERVICE DELIVERY AND CITIZENRY PARTICIPATION
The Africa Institute of South Africa (AISA) has launched a research program to evaluate and develop the capacity of local municipalities for delivering public services.
South Africa has one of the highest rates of public protests in the world. Ongoing service delivery protests threaten the legitimacy of South African democracy. In fulfilling its mandate to produce knowledge aimed at informing sustainable political and socio-economic development in Africa, AISA’s response was to establish an international collaboration that will deliver the most advanced knowledge production aimed at informing sustainable political and socio-economic development in Africa.
The international collaboration has been established between experts from Rutgers University—Newark School of Public Affairs and Administration and the National Center for Public Performance, and the Barbara Jordan Mickey Leland School of Public Affairs, Texas Southern University.
AISA’s Good Governance and National Productivity project, performed in collaboration with scholars the afore-mentioned institutions, is a five-year project that begins this month with field visits in the City of Tshwane, North West and Limpopo provinces.
Along with Rutgers University—Newark School of Public Affairs and Administration and the National Center for Public Performance, AISA recently rolled out the Research program to examine the operational level of services offered, challenges and prospects, and the various ways in which South African municipalities can provide these services in an affordable and efficient manner. Both institutions will also collaborate on research tools designed to promote Social Media as a democratic tool. The research on social media is another good governance project which is being implemented in partnership with the City of Tshwane.
The Product-Process Spectrum model will be one of the research techniques implemented as it includes factors such as workforce and equipment characteristics, management challenges, and the specific kinds of performance indicators associated with different categories of product-process.
This Research initiative is headed by Dean March Holzer: School of Public Administration at Rutgers University and Professor Narnia Bohler-Muller, Director: Social Sciences at the Africa Institute of South Africa. The Research undertaking is currently led by Professor Quintus Jett, and a Research team inclusive of Ms Yazini Funeka April, Project Coordinator and Research Specialist: Governance and Democracy at AISA; and Professor Byron Price, Southern Texas University.
